Exploring Values
Doodling
Using a ballpoint pen to doodle feels natural to me- I am just using a tool I have close at hand and making a few lines, right? It’s convenient, easily accessible, and – what’s really great about it- it forces me to accept my ‘mistakes’ without erasing.
Doodling- Values
The masters of old had immense understanding of value in their sketches- their sketches were done in charcoal, ink (with a feather or a stick dipped in ink), or with grease crayons. Darker values will help give a 3-dimensional feel to your drawings and doodles as well as to your paintings. Just keep adding lines and thereby darker values to create shading. Here I am imagining a light source from the left, that would be creating a deep shadow on the right of the face.
Homework
Make a doodle using some mark making tool you don’t use often- perhaps a ballpoint pen,- or crayons, markers, or a stick dipped in ink. Then post it on FaceBook in the Closed Group Artisessential.
