Space in Drawing and creating 2-D Art:

In art we talk of 3 basic components in a composition; the frame, positive space and negative space.  Very simply put, positive space is the space that the subject of the artwork occupies. The negative space is the space surrounding the subject. Even if there is no frame drawn into the artwork the ending of the surface (paper or canvas) functions as the frame in which the artwork exists.

In the image to the left, the dark chain is the subject and represents the positive space. In the picture below, the dark values are now occupying the negative space. And by the way- there is no value judgment in these labels- negative and positive. One simply cannot exist without the other and together they form a Whole. Also, it really works to focus on depicting the negative space within a drawing; it actually often makes for a more accurate rendering.

Creating “Sacred Space”

We have talked quite a bit about space, how to clear and smudge your space around you, in your home, how to set up your studio space, how to create illusions of space in drawing and in paintings, and even how to journey to the three worlds in which there is no time and space. Creating sacred space is most important in many situations, before journeying, meditating, creating intuitive paintings even.

To do so is easy; breathing deeply, set your intention to create sacred space around you and welcome in your spirit guides and angels. Feel your feet on the floor and your connection to Planet earth. Take another deep breath and feel your connection to the Sky and the Heavens above, another deep breath and feel these energies flowing through you, meeting in your heart. Feel how blessed your heart is- a beautiful connection point between Heaven and Earth- as above so below. Your heart is always the nexus point in the sacred figure eight of the energetic in-breath and out-breath. Lighting candles, incense, chanting aum, playing bells, all are great tools for creating sacred space.

Holding Space

When you hold space for others you are creating a space in your energy and in the energy between the two of you where the other person can feel safe. Safe to express themselves, safe to be who they are, and at the same time you are seeing them in their highest form and not judging. You can do this in regular conversation, or when doing healing work, or anytime you are helping a friend- lifting up someone whether they are there or not.
